Autumn in Manhattan is magical. The changing leaves paint the parks and streets with warm tones of yellow and orange. As I arrived at Central Park for my engagement session with Samir and Saskia, the golden light was beginning to peak over the Manhattan skyline and my excitement was at an all time high. Nothing makes me feel more inspired than gorgeous light, a madly in love couple, and the incredible energy of New York City. I already knew these Manhattan engagement photos were going to be some of my favorite yet.
We started the session by walking around Central Park, taking in the views as I photographed their quiet yet obvious love for one another. I always try to be as unobtrusive as possible with my couples so they don’t feel the need to pose or force anything. Samir and Saskia quickly fell into a groove as their engagement photos came to life.
We headed towards the iconic Bow Bridge, the light filtering through the trees, casting a warm glow. I stepped away to photograph Samir and Saskia from a distance as they shared a private moment together on the bridge. I always love to play with a variety of angles and lengths to give engagement photos more depth and story to them. This also allowed for Samir and Saskia to have a second to themselves, taking in the tranquil water and views of Manhattan.
When it comes to engagement photos, especially Manhattan engagement photos, I always make an intention to slow down. I never want you to feel like you’re in a rush, forced to capture your love story in a matter of minutes. Photographing your love on film also helps with this. As I load my camera with film, it gives you and your partner a minute to connect. A minute to laugh, embrace, get out any nerves. At the end of the day, the photos are just a means of telling your love story. Your love is the true star of the show.
After leaving the park, we made our way to the West Village, but first took some fun, creative shots in the subway station. This was a shot I had been dreaming about for so long and was so excited to bring to life. Samir and Saskia then changed outfits and we began exploring the vibrant streets of Manhattan. The city offered a different backdrop and I loved how their outfits presented a more casual, understated vibe to match the urban setting. It was amazing to see how calm of a presence Samir and Saskia’s love was in contrast to the buzzing streets of New York City. The city bustled around them, but they were in their own world.
Manhattan engagement photos wouldn’t be complete without the iconic city stoop. We took a moment to sit and relax, and I got to be a fly on the wall for this part of Samir and Saskia’s love story. I always offer my couples prompts to make being in front of the camera feel a bit easier, but these two really didn’t need any direction from me. Their love was effortless, easy, every photo feeling authentic and true to who they are as a couple. Their love reminded me of the importance of finding the quiet moments. Wedding days and photoshoots can be hectic, but love shines brightest when you’re able to take away the extra fluff and focus on what matters most. This Manhattan engagement session was a beautiful reminder of that.
As we wrapped up the day, we took our last few photos on cute corners and side streets of the city before parting ways. The love these two shared mixed with the energy and colors of New York City was so inspiring to me. A city of millions can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet, in the midst of it all, true love stands out. I walked away giddy with excitement to go home and edit the photos and send the film off to the lab. I felt not only grateful for my job as a photographer, but so lucky to get to constantly witness such beautiful love stories. Love stories that I know will last a lifetime.
